Many of the adult classes are suitable for portfolio development for high school students interested in majoring in art.

For the M&T Seniors Scholarship in the Arts (must be a member of the Delaplaine Center) please call 301-698-0656 x 107 to register - one class per session. Scholarships cannot be applied to workshops.

Ceramics Classes:
Introduction to Ceramics

Cost:  $250 ($230 members)
If you are interested in working with clay, but have little or no experience with the medium, then this 9-week class is the course for you. This course will cover hand-building as well as the potter’s wheel. It will acquaint students with the clay forming process and basic glazing procedures. Beginners and those with no experience are encouraged to take this class.

Fees for ceramics classes includes clay, glazes and firing.

Intermediate Potter’s Wheel

Potters with experience on the wheel will practice their skills in order to find their own style at their own pace. Instruction will be geared to each student’s needs.   Class includes demonstrations, hands-on experimenting and group critiques.  The emphasis will be on functional forms, and attention will be paid to finishing, decorating and glazing.  Fees for ceramics classes includes clay, glazes and firing.

Ceramic Sculpture

Cost:  $240 ($220 members)
Clay - so pliable and changeable for the artist, yet so sturdy and durable when fired - is a very satisfying material for sculpting.  Sculpture methods and special techniques for creating clay artwork will be covered in this class. Students will create sculptures using paper clay, and sculpture clay.  Special armatures, and building methods with clay will be covered in class.  Alternative methods of applying glaze, or other coatings to the clay to enhance the artist’s intent, will be demonstrated.

This class acquaints students with the procedures necessary to progress in the study of portraiture using drawing media. The instructor will go over basic anatomical structure, lighting and compositional organization of facial features in capturing the likeness of an individual.   Students are encouraged, though not required, to have some previous knowledge of drawing techniques.  Students will work from both live models and photographs.

We will explore putting flowers onto the surface of a glass bead. We will start with simple daisies and progress to multi-layered, complex blossoms. We will also learn how to make stamen cane for the centers of flowers and how to use it.  If time allows, we will explore floral shaped beads, as well.  Students must have taken Introduction to Glass Beadmaking.

Beginning Jewelry

Basic jewelry-making tools and techniques for sterling silver and nonferrous metals will be taught and students will create a finished piece of jewelry.  Techniques to be taught are: fabrication from metal; cutting and piercing; use of a propane/oxygen torch; texturing; soldering; jump-ring and chain making; nontoxic patina for copper, brass and silver; simple stone setting; metal forming; cold connection/rivet and buffing.
Registration Information:  Class fee includes basic supplies including copper, nickel or brass for class projects. Additional supply fees may be required.

This hands-on introductory course is designed to establish a structural framework in the technical aspects of black and white photography and use of the darkroom.  Learn camera operation and handling, film processing and darkroom printing.  Participants must have access to a 35-mm SLR with manual option camera and supply their own film and photography paper.
