Toile d'Animaux

Paintings by Elizabeth Holtry
February 6—28

An animal’s worth is often determined by its beauty, intelligence, cuddliness, or kinship with humans, so why do we advocate equality among our species, yet not in the animal kingdom?  Elizabeth Holtry’s artwork, painted in the style of eighteenth century French toile fabric, explores prejudicial attitudes toward animals that are often considered unattractive, repulsive, or unnecessary.

SUN AND SHADOWS

Paintings by Cynthina Young
February 6—28

A series of large oil paintings by Cynthia Young trace the appearance of the sun as it lightens the Earth and creeps between bushes and trees in irregular patterns. Such shadows remind us of the mysterious and sometimes sinister lack of light during an approaching storm or in a night sky.

Frederick All-County Public School Student Art Exhibition
March 6—28
An annual exhibition featuring student works chosen by Frederick County art teachers showcasing works in a variety of mediums by students from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Afternoons ~ Where Drawing Meets Painting

Paintings by Jackie Hoysted
January 2—February 28

The artist draws from life, with the objective of creating paintings that remain firmly within the realm of drawing. Her images are a celebration of the fresh decision-making process of drawing combined with the richness of color and texture of paint. Her works are playful, sensuous, and moody ~ sometimes fierce, sometimes soft, but always highly sensitive.

Elaine Brandes: Art Quilts
March 6—May 16
Quilt artist and plein-air painter Elaine Brandes creates 'paintings' with fabrick, needle, and thread. In this art quilt exhibit, the artist combines her love of texture, color, and design to create unique images inspired by the mysteries of the natural world.

TRANSFORMATIONS

Sculptures by Alexandra Zealand
January 9—March 13

These abstract and emotionally loaded sculptures were created through massing everyday trash objects. Gathering materials such as grape stems, coffee filters, and burnt matches into new objects, the artist explores the conflicts inherent in ephemera: growth versus purpose, beauty versus fragility, and protection versus death.

Solitude

Photographs by John Kuhn
January 9—February 28

Solitude evokes a sense of seclusion to the viewer. Devoid of people, each photograph depicts a scene stressing the main focus, offset by the surrounding emptiness.

A SENSE OF PLACE

Photographs by Jo Ann Tooley
March 6—April 25

Tooley's black and white images reflect isolation and solitude. She captures certain scenes, especially ones she remembers from her youth: flowers growing wildly in open fields, empty roads with sun filtering through the trees, and mist coming off the mountains.
