Into the Singularity
Tom Block
May 3 – 31 (The F&M Gallery)
Reception: Saturday, May 3, 3-5 PM
This very large (24 panels measuring 6 x 72 feet) painting is Block’s exploration of the human attempt to make sense of the world and of our shared struggle to develop and live by a moral code. His hope is that his art will have an activist influence, causing viewers to question their own roles in making the world a better place to live.
Transplant
Ellen Hill and Carien Quiroga
May 3 – 31 (The Kline Gallery)
Reception: Saturday, May 3, 3-5 PM
This collaborative installation consists of sewn and embellished paper torsos rising from the “earth” in rows. Quiroga, whose background is in sculpture, uses natural and found objects. Hill’s background is in two-dimensional media, with emphasis on paper pulp painting. Quiroga and Hill, both “transplants” to the region, deal with the idea of transplanting on both a universal and personal level.
The Regional Juried Exhibit

Reception: Saturday, June 14, 3-5 PM
Our annual juried exhibit is open to artists within a 75-mile radius of Frederick, working in any media. The juror is Jack Rasmussen, director and curator of the American University Museum. Cash prizes will be awarded for excellence. Each year this show brings new and vibrant art by professional and emerging artists.
Another Class Act
The Delaplaine Student-Faculty Show
August 2 – 24
Reception: Saturday, August 2, 3-5 PM
Delaplaine students exhibit their artwork created in classes taken between August 2007-August 2008. Faculty members will also exhibit some of their own work. The wide range of styles and media will clearly demonstrate the variety of classes and subjects the Delaplaine offers.

In 2007 five artists challenged themselves to enter into a collaborative exercise in creating. Drawings, ideas and choices were made early in the process, then revisited and refined until a series of unique pieces emerged. These 18 sculptural works reveal some surprising leaps of faith and intriguing results.

The Gardiner Gallery
Space Imagined
Brook Overline
March 15 – May 25
Reception: Saturday, April 5, 3-5 PM
Overline’s paintings are composed of multiple layers of space, evoking a sense of collision on a single plane. The objects depicted in the paintings have a “found” quality, and are juxtaposed with disparate images of figures, animals, snakes, car grills and grids.

Linda Postelle

Ms. Postelle, inspired by the landscapes of Provençe, has depicted sunlit fields, rows of lavender and quaint towns in this series of acrylic paintings.
Great Falls, The Potomac and the C &O Canal
Lee Goodwin

Reception: Saturday, September 6, 3-5 PM
This exhibit features contemporary landscape photographs of Great Falls, the Potomac River, and the C&O Canal selected from hundreds of images taken over the last 12 years. Goodwin’s award-winning landscapes have been called both lyrical and unabashedly beautiful.

The atmospheric landscapes of foggy mornings and mist-covered fields surround Lou Gagnon’s home in Northern Virginia. Charged with vibrant color, his strongly composed contemporary pastel paintings capture the imagination.
Creating Humanity (amidst the illusion of our separateness)
Sonya A. Lawyer

Reception: Saturday, June 14, 3-5PM
Ms. Lawyer uses a variety of media to communicate powerful messages about family, friends, society and the past. This series of mixed-media quilts, created using a photo-transfer technique on hand-dyed fabrics, incorporates vintage photographs the artist found through online auctions, antique stores and fairs.
Earth’s Spirit

The intricacies of a fallen leaf or the subtle colors within a creek stone inspire Stroman’s paintings, which are a combination of trompe l’oeil and abstraction. As a socially and politically conscious artist he seeks to make a personal statement about man’s effect on the environment and nature’s struggle against an ever-encroaching environment.

This mixture of intimate ceramic and mixed media sculptures hearkens to archetypal symbols from ancient myths and tales. The iconic imagery takes many forms: the bird as harbinger and messenger, the boat as an emblem of journey, and the forest as a threshold to the unknown.

Working in bright colors and an energetic style, Holly’s whimsical paintings depict cats engaged in a variety of “people” activities.
A Retrospective
Agop “Jack” and Regina Kaiktsian

Reception: Saturday, August 2, 3-5 PM
This retrospective exhibit features the sculptures and paintings of husband and wife, Jack (1923-2002) and Regina Kaiktsian. This exhibit spans two lifetimes of artistic evolution gained by meeting and overcoming creative challenges.

This exhibits features new photography created near Fernandino Beach in Florida while the artist was on vacation. “ I did not intend to work at photography this vacation. But the light, textures, smells and sounds of the beach couldn’t help but be photographed.”
Portugal
Joe Sweeney
June 7 – August 10
Reception: Saturday, June 14, 3-5PM
Local teacher and photographer Joe Sweeney traveled to Portugal in the Summer of 2007. His photographs show the wonderful light and colors, he found there. The deep blues of the sea and sky were echoed in the painted highlights of whitewashed buildings. Portugal’s rough edge shows in the peeling paint and fluttering laundry on a narrow, hilly side street. These photos explore the light, colors and textures of Europe’s western-most country.
Angels and Insects

These macro photographs of winged insects conjure a world of imagination, and ask the viewer to recognize beauty in the smallest and most common of things.
