"From Picture to Painting: Re-Imagining Your Source Material" with Skip Lawrence

How can you take inspiration from source material like photos and sketches without resorting to imitation? How do you make the leap from recording visual facts to expressing your own idea in a painting? In this workshop, award winning painter and teacher Skip Lawrence, guides artists in rethinking their source material into fresh, expressive, original paintings.  Participants are free to work in any media. Through daily lectures, slide presentations, and painting demonstrations, Skip illustrates how reconsidering your design tools can open up new possibilities of expression. When a painter learns to see the visual world in a new way their art will naturally reflect the fresh possibilities. Artists should bring 3-5 images of their recent work, photos, sketches and other source material to work on for the week. All experience levels welcome.

Plein Air Painting with Walt Bartman

Paint outdoors and be inspired!

Join internationally known artist and instructor, Walt Bartman, for a fun-fillled, 3 day ‘plein air’ painting experience in historic Frederick.  This workshop sold out early last year, so register early!

The workshop offers painting demonstrations, audio-visual presentations, and lively discussions on drawing, composition, color theory, and paint application. Learn practical plein air techniques while exploring the challenges and advantages of painting outdoors. Morning instruction in the studio is followed by afternoon painting sessions at different outdoor sites each day. Daily critiques offer valuable feedback.

All levels welcome, although some drawing and painting experience is recommended. A suggested supply list will be provided prior to the workshop. Alternate painting sites to be determined in the event of inclement weather.

This workshop is just one of many events being held in conjunction with “Easels in Frederick”, a national juried plein air painting competition happening June 20-24, 2012. For more information on Easels in Frederick and associated events, visit easelsinfrederick.org.
