About
Serving the community since 1986, The Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center has grown from a small community arts group to a vibrantly active nonprofit organization that serves over 85,000 visitors each year. A 40,000 square foot flagship of the arts, the Delaplaine features five exhibit spaces showcasing local, regional, and national artists; three floors of spacious classrooms; a beautiful event pavilion; the Etchison Davis Public Art Reference library; and a retail store supporting local artists in our community.
The Delaplaine also manages three satellite galleries in partnership with the Frederick County Public Libraries. Satellite galleries are located at the Brunswick Branch Library, the Thurmont Regional Library, and the Urbana Regional Library.
Housed in the 100-year-old Mountain City Mill on the banks of Carroll Creek in historic downtown Frederick, the Delaplaine has over 50 exhibits each year, with building-wide receptions open to the public each first Saturday of the month. Artists of all ages and experience levels may choose from over 250 classes in an ever-growing list of media and subjects. Small class sizes are led by experienced instructors, who are also working artists. The Delaplaine also offers family-friendly events, one-day workshops, gallery talks and multi-day Master Artist Workshops to round out the educational experience.
The Delaplaine Arts Center is the only arts organization to have been certified under the Standards for Excellence in Nonprofit Management by the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations. The 2012 Annual Report is available via pdf download.
